ADMINISTRATIVE DIRECTOR
At an absolutely critical time for lower income people and communities, the Public Interest Law Project (PILP) has an exciting opening for an Administrative Director. Our work helps keep people in affordable homes and protects their entitlement to public benefits and supportive services. Founded in 1996 as the federal government severely restricted the work of federally funded legal services lawyers, PILP is a nonprofit support center for California legal services and other public interest law programs. We advance justice for low income people and communities by building the capacity of legal services organizations through impact litigation, legislative advocacy, trainings, and publications, and by advocating for low income community groups and individuals.
We are looking for someone committed to our mission and enthusiastic to play a critical role in pursuit of PILP’s goals and strategies. The Administrative Director will manage finances, human resources, communications, and development efforts, and will supervise support staff. As a smaller organization, this position necessarily spans several areas, and we realize that even the best candidates may not possess expertise in all. PILP commits to drawing on the applicant’s knowledge and skills while providing support for growth in expertise in other areas. The job is an exempt, management position.
Responsibilities:
Administration
- Human Resources: Serve as PILP’s principal human resources officer, working closely with the Director and support staff to maintain and update personnel policies and employee benefits packages
- Management: Supervise Office Manager and Legal Assistant
- Communications: Coordinate website updates, social media, newsletters, and other communication channels to promote and increase PILP’s visibility
- Technology & Office Equipment: Manage computer, software, and office equipment
- Lease & Sub-Leases: Manage and negotiate office lease and subleases in conjunction with the Director and Office Manager
Finances
- Accounting & Bookkeeping: Prepare and monitor adherence to annual budget and supervise accounting, bookkeeping, and invoice procedures, including all monthly and quarterly financial reports
- Taxes, Audits, & Financial Reports: Ensure the timely completion and submission of the organization’s annual audit, tax returns, and other state and federal financial filings
- Insurance: Manage and review all insurance coverage
Development & Grant Management
- Development: Prepare and submit funding proposals and track and report on deliverables for grants
- Fundraising: Build and maintain relationships with existing and potential funders, including foundations and private donors
Qualifications
- Prior experience in accounting and bookkeeping and at least one of the above categories of responsibility. This is not an entry level position.
- Bachelor’s Degree strongly preferred
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong desire to further PILP’s mission of advancing justice for low income people and communities
- Initiative and ability to accomplish goals
- Organizational financial management proficiency
Preferred Qualifications
- Office Administration: Advanced knowledge of office administration, including generally accepted human resources practices and operational and accounting practices. Nonprofit experience and knowledge of California human resources laws, desired.
- Management: A track record of managing a team and working collaboratively to achieve results and build trust, respect, and confidence of staff and colleagues.
- Technical understanding: Experience in the maintenance and use of office computers, networks, databases, websites, and social media, including advanced familiarity with Windows operating system and Microsoft software.
- Development expertise: Experience in fundraising and creating and researching fundraising materials, grant proposals, and reports.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary range: $65,000 to $92,000 depending on experience. Benefits include full health benefits for employee and eligible family members, additional self-insurance for dental and other medical needs, generous vacation and leave, and a generous employer-contributed retirement plan, plus access to an employee-funded 403(b) retirement plan.
