PUBLIC INTEREST LAW STUDENT INTERNSHIPS

FOR SUMMER 2012

The Public Interest Law Project (PILP) is an Oakland-based, legal non-profit organization committed to advancing justice for low-income people and communities.  As a statewide support center for local legal services and public interest organizations, PILP engages in statewide impact litigation, training and policy advocacy primarily in the areas of public benefits and affordable housing. You can learn more about the work of our organization at:  http://www.pilpca.org/.

The law students currently working for us are engaged in every phase of complex litigation, working with highly skilled and experienced attorneys.  One student is involved in all aspects of preparing an affordable housing/fair housing case for trial — drafting discovery motions, participating in strategy sessions with co-counsel and negotiations with opposing counsel. Another law student is researching the legislative history and case law of specific provisions of the Welfare and Institutions Code, supporting the conduct of depositions, drafting legal memoranda, motions and stipulations, and has argued her first discovery motion.

The ideal candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to public interest law, and excellent research, writing and analytical skills. Law students are encouraged to apply for a stipend from their law school or from one of the public interest funding sources available or to apply for work-study.  A commitment of ten to twelve weeks during the summer is requested. As a support center funded, in part, by the State Bar, PILP takes very seriously its mentoring and supervisory role.

Interested candidates for the upcoming summer internship positions should contact Patti Prunhuber, pprunhuber@pilpca.org, and provide a brief statement of interest, a resume and their dates of availability.
